Animation of the passage of the lunar shadow created in WinEclipse, a program developed by the late Heinz Scsibrany.

This is an interesting eclipse because the shadow moves in the opposite direction than usual—from east to west. The shadow is passes over the North Pole and strikes the Earth on the far side. This is only possible for eclipses that occur near the solstices. 

From the Meteosat 7 perspective, the shadow is not especially prominent, as it occurs while Europe is in darkness. In this image, the shadow is a dark notch in the sunlit part of the glove, near the northeast limb. Image: EUMETSAT.
