Animation of the passage of the lunar shadow created in WinEclipse, a program created by the late Heinz Scsibrany.

The 1983 total eclipse lead travellers to Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, a landscape of volcanoes and convective clouds.  Satellite coverage of the eclipse track was very limited at the time. Himawari 1, the Japanese geostationary satellite was transmitting in infrared only, and the American satellite, GOES 6, could only see the eclipse shadow on the extreme edge of its field of view. Look closely in the lower left in the animation below to see a hint of the shadow moving into the satellite’s field of view as the Earth becomes a thin crescent.
